british blue 100 – design collection

31st July 2017
EK BBC 005

This collection of designs in british blue 100 is inspired by the creativity and quintessential Britishness of ‘Charleston’, the Sussex home and meeting place of the artists, writers and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury Group.

The house and garden live on as a unique legacy to Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant’s creativity within a domestic context – with murals, painted furniture, ceramics, paintings and textiles testament to the inhabitants’ artistic and intellectual activity.

Erika says, “For me Charleston farmhouse (one of my preferred local places to indulge a rare afternoon off) represents liberation and an unbridled creativity. The vibrant colours and abstracted shapes which jump from canvas to wall to textile and back again, have inspired the opulent palette of british blue 100 and informed my design decisions for this collection.

This is not costume, nor appropriation but homage to a modern attitude and freedom of expression. I wanted to design simple, loose forms with subtle details to become an everyday uniform. Wear with your sleeves rolled up for digging the garden or throw over a painting smock for cool afternoons in the studio; this is about an ease of wear and a relaxed fit for a creative lifestyle.”

Design leaflets feature beautiful studio photography by Yuki Sugiura, clear instructions and visual schematics.

Shibori colours 2017

Shibori colours 2017

We have collaborated with London based Shibori designer Rob Jones who has created bespoke backdrops and bags for us, and inspired our new colours.

Rob says “Shibori is a slow craft, often with many hours of stitching, binding, clamping and pole-dyeing followed by more hours at the indigo vat or mordanting, dyeing and over-dyeing fabric”. Rob’s creations demonstrate his love of fabric and the time spent to produce something original and lovingly handmade, with care and thought put into it.

Like knitting and crochet, Shibori represents slow crafting, tradition and modernity combined and Rob shares with us “a desire to bring something beautiful and different into the world.”

For more information on Rob’s designs or to take part in a Shibori workshop, please see, www.romordesigns.com.
