Knitspiration: Houndstooth

14th November 2015

photo by Yuki Sugiura from Simple Colour Knitting.

As the last colourful leaves fall from the trees and Autumn blusters its way into Winter, the need for a cosy woolly hat is growing day by day.

The Houndstooth Hat in Simple Colour Knitting will certainly be my hat of choice this season – a basic beanie shape with a rolled edge brim and knitted in a bold two-colour houndstooth pattern using the simple ‘stranding’ technique. And don’t forget to top it off with an impressive two-colour pom pom for maximum impact!

Traditional plaids are always on trend for Autumn / Winter but this bold and playful check is fun and modern and a quick and easy way to update your outerwear. Choose bright colours of maxi wool, or keep it chic with a sophisticated monochrome palette.

This project would make a perfect quick-knit Christmas gift too!

Winnie Logo & Web

I am very excited to be travelling to the Emerald Isle for the Knitting & Stitching Show in Dublin.

The show takes place from 12th to 15th November and I will be on Stand F30 on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th with the lovely team from Winnie’s Craft Cafe signing copies of NEW book Simple Colour Knitting, displaying samples from Junior Colour Knits, and of course chatting all things woolly.

Winnie’s Craft Cafe will have their biggest stand yet at this year’s show and it promises to be a crafty party with a selection of the yarns, books and notions that can be found both online and in store at their fabulous shop and cafe just outside Dublin city in Blackrock.

There is also a rumour that Winnie’s homemade farm ice cream trike might also be making an appearance…!!

warm sweater day // warme truien dag

2nd November 2015
Warmetruidag copy

Warm Sweater Day, or Warmetruiendag, is a global initiative started in The Netherlands to campaign for real action against climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By showing how fashionable and comfortable the sustainable way of life it, the aim is to make saving energy the new normal.

Last year in Febuary 2015, 200,000 people joined the action in the Netherlands and the campaign had a overwhelming media coverage of 30 million. Warmetruiendag won the National Energy Globe Award of the Energy Globe Foundation, and is now also organised in Belgium (dikke truiendag), Canada (by WWF) and Germany and Austria (Pullitag).

It couldn’t be any simpler to make a real difference. On Friday 5th February 2016 people at school, home and in the office are encouraged to turn down the heating by one or two degrees and show, by simply wearing a sweater, that they care for the environment. Each degree lower saves 6% energy and therefore CO2 emissions and heating costs. The sweater is therefore a symbol of what people can do themselves to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change, with the very accessible concepts of ‘do it yourself’ and ‘working together’.

Especially for Warm Sweater Day a sweater is designed that you can knit yourself (“de Trui Van 2016”). The pattern is available for free on the website ( Together with fashion designers, product designers and scientists, Warm Sweater Day looks for ways to keep yourself warm (personal thermoregulation), and thus reduce the emission of greenhouse gases considerably. The slogan here is: use the power of fashion for saving energy!

I was fortunate enough to meet the inspiring Anne-Marie Pronk, producer of the knitting project for Warm Sweater Day at a trade show in Cologne earlier this year and am just thrilled that she and innovative Dutch knitwear designer Carolien Evers ( have chosen to use maxi wool for the 2016 sweater design. For the design Carolien looked carefully at nature and the construction of bees inspired her to use a voluminous bee stitch. Wool is naturally soft, comfortable and sustainable making it the ultimate fibre to knit your own Warm Sweater Day sweater, wool is a natural insulator and will therefore keep you warm, and allow your skin to breathe.

So pick up your needles, a few hanks of wool, download the pattern for free and knit your way to a greener future for us all.

Back to School

11th September 2015
Working on the website

There’s a definite chill in the air and its beginning to feel a lot like sweater weather – or at least thinking about knitting sweaters, hats and scarves in anticipation of the big freeze, and we are sharpening our pencils (and knitting needles) for a busy season ahead…

Here at erika knight towers in sunny Brighton we have had a busy summer updating our website, knitting up samples for our Junior Colour Knits trunk show (available to all retailers NOW!) and working on new exciting yarn and pattern developments for 2016!! Its been all go – but I did manage to get away for a few days to visit my good friend, the fabulous embroidery designer Anette Erikkson in her beautiful home by a peaceful lake in Boras, Sweden – just bliss!

I hope that you like our new look website – we will be updating more regularly with happenings from the studio, new projects we are working on, where we will be at shops and events around the country, introducing you to our sales reps, and of course lots of woolly musings…

So, what’s new in September?

My new knitting book Simple Colour Knitting has been a long time coming (and I must thank all my ever-so patient friends, family and colleagues – you know who you are – for their upmost support) and it is due to be released later this month. I will be signing books on the GMC book stand with Quadrille publishers at the Knitting & Stitching Show at Ally Pally on Friday 9th October – so do come and say Hi if you are there!

The new collection of patterns for the erika knight for John Lewis collaboration is now in store and online – featuring accessories, projects for the home, womenswear garments and cute new baby projects – in the new super soft Baby DK. We have also added two new yarns into the range, and extended the colours of the existing yarns. We have had the privilege of working with photographer Yuki Sugiura again for this project and hope you will agree that the the patterns are elevated to a new level of Craft, with a capital ‘C’ thanks to her sensibility.

Our friends at Craft Days in Saffron Walden will be hosting a trunk show of the 12 garments from Junior Colour Knits all next week, and I will be at Craft Days next Friday 18th September for a ‘show and tell’ to chat about the new patterns and to answer any questions. The trunk show will then be winging its way to beautiful shop The Craft Company in Portugal, where I am also told they will be hosting a British event with tea and scones!

…If you have knitted any of the projects from Junior Colour Knits for your own cool kids, please do share them with us on our social media @knightkraft with #juniorcolourknits

Wool Week is just around the corner and I will be returning to Craft Days on Thursday 8th October for a very special Wool Week workshop, collaborating with fabulous designer Emma Wright who has designed an exclusive project for us for Wool Week 2015 in maxi and fur wools…more of that very soon…

I am sad to say that visiting Jaipur with Knit for Peace is, unfortunately no longer on my very busy Autumn schedule – however the trip still promises to be an incredible experience, with knitting sessions led by the fantastic Rosy Tucker (knitting editor of Prima magazine). There may just still be some last minute places on the holiday, so do contact Knit for Peace for further information.

So, thats all for now, but do keep following us on facebook, twitter and instagram for lots more news and photos from the studio.
